PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf: What's the Difference?

By the Dailygolf team · Updated October 2026

Professional golf is split between several tours, each with its own schedule, format and history. If you want to know who plays where, this guide covers the main ones.

The PGA Tour

The PGA Tour is the main men's professional tour in the United States and the one with the largest prize funds. Most of the world's best players hold membership, and the season ends with the FedEx Cup playoffs. Events are 72 holes of stroke play with a cut after 36 holes, which sends the players outside the top group home for the weekend.

The DP World Tour

Formerly known as the European Tour, it was renamed the DP World Tour in 2022. It holds events across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australasia, and its season-long ranking is the Race to Dubai. Many players hold cards on both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, and there is a pathway between the two.

LIV Golf

LIV Golf launched in 2022 with backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. It differs from the traditional tours in several ways: events are 54 holes instead of 72, there is no cut, players begin on different holes in a shotgun start, and there is a team competition alongside the individual one. Its arrival caused a major split in the sport, with debates over money, world ranking points and eligibility for the majors.

The Korn Ferry Tour

The Korn Ferry Tour is the PGA Tour's development tour. The best players at the end of the season earn cards for the main tour the following year, which makes it the main route for young professionals to reach the top.

The LPGA Tour

The LPGA is the leading women's professional tour. It has its own major championships and a global schedule. Our current Guess the Pro Golfer game focuses on the men's game, but women's golf is an important part of the sport.

The majors and team events

The four majors sit above all tours, and the strongest players from every tour can qualify. Team events like the Ryder Cup (USA vs Europe) and the Presidents Cup (USA vs International team) are held every two years on alternating schedules.

Why tour is a clue in Dailygolf

In Guess the Pro Golfer, the "Tour" clue tells you where a player competes. It is a quick way to rule players in or out: a green tour square can remove half of the field in a single guess.

Tour structures, schedules and rules change over time. Check the official tour websites for the latest.
